Charitropakhyan (ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੋਪਖਯਾਨ) is a bani written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji Mahraaj containing 405 stories on how the ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ (vices): ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ, ਲੋਭ, ਮੋਹ, ਹੰਕਾਰ destroy a persons political and family life.
ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੋਪਖਯਾਨ is split into 2 words: ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੋ = the image, ਪਖਯਾਨ = to explain/do katha of, so it’s literal meaning is: ‘a story of collected painted words’, all of these stories are communicating a message to the reader (ਗੁਰੂ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਪੰਥ) on how to battle these vices.
ਤੁਹੀ ਖੜਗਧਾਰਾ ਤੁਹੀ ਬਾਢਵਾਰੀ || ਤੁਹੀ ਤੀਰ ਤਰਵਾਰ ਕਾਤੀ ਕਟਾਰੀ || ਹਲਬੀ ਜੁਨਬੀ ਮਗਰਬੀ ਤੁਹੀ ਹੈ || ਨਿਹਾਰੌ ਜਹਾ ਆਪੁ ਠਾਢੀ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ || ੧ ||
In this Charitar, the beginning opening of Cahritripakhyan this is Guru Sahib Ji opening up by doing ਆਰਾਧਨਾ/ਉਸਤੱਤ of Akaal Purakh who comes in the form of ਭਗੌਤੀ, ਕਿਰਪਾਨ, and ਮਾਇਆ. This is Guru Sahib Ji doing ਨਮਸਕਾਰ (praise) to Akaal Purakh.
In other areas of Dasam Bani, Mahraaj has something called a Khas Patra (angs Guru Sahib have written themselves). Curently the Sri Charitropakhyan Pothi is kept in the Sanctum Sactorium of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, in Anandpur Sahib.
