There is an overlaying story, of the king, putting his son into the jail, of which his, Advisors/Mantris advise the King, by using different stories that may have occurred in history to pursue him into not putting his son into jail, as the intellect he has has been dimmed by the Vikaars. Each Charitar is a painting of the picture of the issue we are in.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

ਬੰਦਿਸਾਲ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੂਤ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥

After the King heard a story from his Mantri, he will send his son back into the bandi (cell) for the night, and he himself will go back to bed and think about the story he just heard.

ਭਈ ਭੋਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਕਰ ਮੰਗਾਯੋ ॥

ਭੋਰ = when the sunrises, his son will be brought to him again.

ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

The mantris see that the king isn't ready to make the decision on how to decide the fate of his son:

ਜਾਨੁਕ ਸੋਕ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

They then tell an Bachan/Sikhiyan (teaching).

Guru Sahib Ji says that from these teaching all of their ਸੋਕ (doubts) are going away slowly, this shows evidence of the way the ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ works (relation ship between Guru and Sikh), as we are stick in duality, happiness and sadness, the Guru gives teachings and guidance according to the ਅਵਸਥਾ (spiritual level) of that Sikh. Like the advisors are doing, they are slowly giving more and more stories leading to a reduction in the King's ਡੁਬਦਾ.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਇਕ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਹੁਤੋ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਮੈਂ ਕੁਟੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

In this story, there is a ਜੋਗੀ, who lives in a ਬਨ (jungle). ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਮੈਂ ਕੁਟੀ ਬਨਾਇ, ਦ੍ਰੁਮ means tree, within this tree the jogi has made a ਕੁਟੀ (house).

ਏਕ ਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਗ੍ਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਚਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

In the nearby village/city of the jungle, there lived a daughter of a ਸਾਹ (a banker/rich person). ਲੈ ਗ੍ਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਚਲਾਇ, the Jogi went to this city, put a spell on the daughter and brought her to wear he lived.
